DeJarnette Sanitarium
Founded in the 1930s, DeJarnette Sanitarium - later known as DeJarnette Center for Human Development and afterwards, Western State Hospital - originally opened as an asylum that practiced methods such as electroshock therapy, shower therapy, lobotomy, and - most prominently - forced sterilization. DeJarnette resigned from the hospital in 1947 and it was renamed shortly after in the 60s. It was later transformed into a children's hospital in 1975 but was shut down for good when Western State Hospital built a new ward on campus.
